{"id":7202,"date":"2018-08-03T16:07:21","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T16:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/?p=7202"},"modified":"2025-12-26T22:30:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T22:30:27","slug":"confronting-gender-based-violence-hopscotch-nadine-aisha-jassat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/2018\/08\/confronting-gender-based-violence-hopscotch-nadine-aisha-jassat\/","title":{"rendered":"Confronting gender-based violence: Hopscotch by Nadine Aisha Jassat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>And let\u2019s just name the problem here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>these streets I\u2019ve walked I\u2019ve walked in fear,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and never once have these words begun<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in a woman\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This week\u2019s Sceptical Scot poetry post highlights Hopscotch, by&nbsp;<a href=\"httpss:\/\/www.nadineaishaj.com\/events-1\">Nadine Aisha Jassat<\/a>, a powerful, gut-churning challenge to gender-based violence.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poem, and the film it inspired, feels deeply personal. But it is set in a context of hard facts and startling statistics. &#8216;Sexual crimes are at the highest level seen since 1971, the first year for which comparable crime groups are available&#8217;, according to <a href=\"httpss:\/\/www.rapecrisisscotland.org.uk\/help-facts\/\">Rape Crisis Scotland<\/a>.&nbsp; While figures for many other crimes are going down, latest Scottish Government statistics show sexual crimes are increasing. Between&nbsp;2015-16 and 2016-17, there was a&nbsp; 5% increase \u2013 10,273 to 10,822.&nbsp; In 2016\/17, 1,755 rapes and 123 attempted rapes were reported to the police in Scotland (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/Resource\/0052\/00525055.pdf)\">Recorded Crime in Scotland<\/a> 2016-17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the statistics are real life experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Sat on the bus with a stranger&#8217;s hot breath &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018I want you.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"httpss:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mdf5S_ILQWA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Against this background, writer and spoken word poet, Nadine works with young people and women of colour using poetry and creative expression to explore issues of sexual violence, racism, Islamophobia, inequality and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017 she&nbsp;was named one of &#8216;<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ywcascotland.org\/nadine-aisha-jassat\/\">30 Inspiring Women Under 30<\/a><\/u>&#8216; by YWCA Scotland. In 2018, having won New Writers Award from <u>Scottish Book Trust,&nbsp;<\/u>she is&nbsp; shortlisted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edwinmorganaward.com\/theshortlist2018.html\">Edwin Morgan Poetry Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During August Nadine will be in Edinburgh taking part in the Just Festival and Edinburgh International Book Festival<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday 20th August \/\/ Just Festival \/\/\u00a0<u><a href=\"httpss:\/\/www.just-festival.org\/2018-just-festival-programme#\/outside-in-poetry-poetry\/\">#OutsideIn: Poetry for Social Justice<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuesday 21st August\u00a0\/\/ Edinburgh International Book Festival\u00a0\/\/\u00a0<u><a href=\"httpss:\/\/www.edbookfest.co.uk\/the-festival\/whats-on\/herland-salon-with-glasgow-women-s-library\">Herland Salon with Glasgow Women&#8217;s Library\u00a0<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopscotch, shortlisted for the Outspoken London Poetry Prize (Poetry in Film) 2018, was adapted as a film-poem by award-winning filmmaker Roxane Vilk with support from Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre and funding from the Scottish Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I still feel his heat in my ear when I hear,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Sexy\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Pretty\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Beautiful\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Fit\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For the full poem click <a href=\"httpss:\/\/www.nadineaishaj.com\/hopscotch\">HERE&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks, by the way, to Malcolm Chisholm\u2019s tweet (@MalcolmChishol1) for the headsup.
