{"id":6640,"date":"2018-03-26T20:56:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T20:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/?p=6640"},"modified":"2026-04-18T19:34:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T19:34:32","slug":"march-lives-letter-boston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/2018\/03\/march-lives-letter-boston\/","title":{"rendered":"March for our lives: letter from Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Her voice breaking and shaking with anger, a survivor of the massacre at Parkland\u2019s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida addressed the crowd on Boston Common.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe are not special, we are not particularly articulate\u201d. Leonor Munoz\u2019 message was that she was a very ordinary teenager at an ordinary school on an ordinary day and that what happened to her could happen in any high school on any main street in any town in America.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fun and anticipation of a teenage Valentine\u2019s Day \u2013 she told us a little about that \u2013 ended when she went outside in response to a fire alarm to be told \u201cCode Red: Run\u201d. Leonor\u2019s older sister Beca, a student at Northeastern University spoke too &#8211; she received a text from her sister that day saying \u201cActive Shooter on Campus &#8211; Do Not Call\u201d. For the crowd of thousands on a grey end-of-winter afternoon clustered around the Common, straining to hear the speeches, that is the text, as one mother\u2019s handmade sign said, that nobody ever wants to receive. Everyone can relate to what is becoming an all-too ordinary story.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-24-at-5.35.19-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"475\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-24-at-5.35.19-PM.png\" alt=\"Mother holds placard at Boston March for our Lives\" class=\"wp-image-6643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-24-at-5.35.19-PM.png 475w, https:\/\/sceptical.scot\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Screen-Shot-2018-03-24-at-5.35.19-PM-287x300.png 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Many snowflakes make a blizzard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teacher and former marine Graciela Mohamedi told the crowd: \u201cThe opposition will call you snowflakes. But do you know what in Massachusetts we call thousands upon thousands of snowflakes rising on a wind of change? We call that a blizzard!\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A young man gave a speech about the suicide of a family friend &#8211; more than 60% of gun deaths in the US are suicides &#8211; &nbsp;and asked for support for two laws in progress in Massachusetts, one a voluntary code people can sign up to so that they bar themselves from buying guns \u201con their bad days\u201d. His friend would have signed this, he said. And another is the kind of \u201cred flag\u201d law that would have allowed authorities in Florida to remove guns from the clearly troubled teen who committed the atrocity at Stoneman Douglas. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a very peaceful protest. I joined the march at Roxbury Community College, from a subway train packed with protesters carrying a multitude of handmade signs. It felt huge, largely filling the streets we walked down and snaking back and forward to the horizon.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too many people have died<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were no police or stewards on the march, just a helicopter, very high in the sky above. There were a few police on the Common, mostly using black pushbikes. They formed a cordon round a small counter-demonstration at the State House, pushbikes to the fore, where they perhaps provide an extra layer of low-vis protection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were lots of individual signs. \u201cMilitary Assault Weapons are Legal? You\u2019re Kidding Me.\u201d; \u201cMy OUTRAGE won\u2019t fit on a SIGN\u201d, \u201cThe only arms that will be in my classroom\u201d \u2013 with a picture of children\u2019s raised hands; an older man with a placard bearing the Dylan lyric; \u201c\u201dHow many deaths will it take till we know that too many people have died\u2019. I saw a couple with matching signs &#8211; hers painted, his scrawled in marker pen \u201cGuns Don\u2019t Kill People? Um, Yes They Do.\u201d One man had a large sign that read simply \u201cSo Proud of You Kids\u201d; and one tall young man carried a Stars and Stripes which he waved above the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 50,000 people marched in Boston, one of 800 student-led events taking place throughout the US and around the world on 24 March.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Featured image: March for our lives Boston 2018: AnubisAbyss CC BY-SA 2.0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe opposition will call you snowflakes.
