A roof over my head, a garden, pictures on the walls, light: home thoughts for our Christmas poetry blog come most powerfully and poignantly from young people who took part in a writing workshop organised by The Rock Trust<\/a>, an Edinburgh-based charity supporting young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Write First Time, one workshop session explored housing and concepts of home. Two poems by Jo, aged 16, and Holly, aged 18, describe what home means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MY SHELTER<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is safe and warm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a place to call my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a roof over my head,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

better than on the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re living with people,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it is challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should keep it clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look after your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it will look after you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is time to be an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pay your bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top up on gas and lecky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never abandon your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is there for your time of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Love your home and be grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may not be much but it is yours,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and you are safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the UK, around 83,000 young people are homeless and 8,229 of them are in Scotland, according to the Rock Trust Winter Report 2015<\/a>.  The charity also reports generous support for the annual sleep out in November which raised almost \u00a380,000 in funding towards support for its work providing support and guidance for vulnerable young people in Edinburgh and the Lothians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human understanding and support go along with the practicalities of keeping a roof over your head, and Write First Time also explored personal development, mental health and relationships. The last session looked at hopes for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we hurtle towards a new year many of us will be making our lists of resolutions for new, better, beginnings. Jo\u2019s poem, I Can\u2019t Brag, captures the huge significance of small daily triumphs; unseen and uncelebrated by the outside world but full of silent hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I CAN\u2019T BRAG<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t pick up the knife or pills today,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but that\u2019s not something I can brag to people about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day I get up out of bed and shower,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but I can\u2019t brag to people about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I try to tell myself something I like about myself every time I look in the mirror,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but I can\u2019t brag about that either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I attempt every day to eat, no matter what the voices inside my head say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but can\u2019t brag about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of my big achievements I\u2019m proud of won\u2019t look good on a CV,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and I can\u2019t brag about them in interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But who cares?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least I know I\u2019m doing it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and that\u2019s all that matters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

We think of the poor and vulnerable, especially those on the streets or in refugee camps, at this season. The Rock Trust does this all year round for the young homeless in Scotland’s capital city.
